Phillip Island Wave Complex     10-12 Phillip Island Road, Newhaven. After recently designing renovations to the existing retail surf shop the owners engaged the design company to create a multi level retail and backpacker accomodation development to the rear of the corner site, adjacent to a large coastal foreshore reserve at the entrance to Phillip Island. Requiring a sensitive approach to maximise the use of the site, reflect the surf and outdoor activity culture of the area and respect the natural surroundings, an iconic development has been achieved appropriately named The Phillip Island Wave Complex. Multiple rooflines at different levels and using fresh colours mixed with natural timbers, glass and shaped balconies result in a well articulated development further complemented by the coastal inspired landscaping, using indigenous and drought tolerant plant species and local artwork within the streetscape. The creation of zones within the building include large communal areas opening onto north facing balconies separated from varying levels of accommodation rooms on two levels above retail shops and an information café providing a comfortable and stylish social environment whilst allowing each zone to be closed off to reduce heating and lighting requirements when not in use. The passive solar design of the Phillip Island Wave Complex means it uses less energy and generates less waste than a conventional hostel of the same size, without impacting on the guest’s experience. |
