Modern Coastal Home

Set on the Mornington Peninsula, the Clarendon Residence is a contemporary exploration of light, proportion, and material honesty. This new build embodies a restrained modern aesthetic defined by clean lines, geometric clarity, and seamless relationship between interior and exterior spaces.

The composition of the facade plays with transparency and solidity - expansive glazing and vertical detailing are balanced by robust masonry and metal cladding. The upper-level projects outward, creating a sense of lightness and providing shelter for the entry below, while a floating balcony framed in glass blurs the boundary between the built form and its natural surroundings.

Internally, the planning prioritises openness and flexibility. The upper floor hosts the primary living spaces, oriented to capture natural light and views of the surrounding landscape. Large sliding doors extend the living area to the terrace, encouraging a fluid connection with the outdoors. Below, secondary living zones and guest accommodation are anchored by a simple material palette that enhances the home's calm, contemporary feel.

Every detail has been considered to create a dwelling that is both sculptural and functional - a modern coastal home that sits confidently within its site while responding to the relaxed character of Dromana's coastal setting.

This home is designed to sit lightly on the land — a breathtaking glass pavilion that embraces the ocean and invites the natural environment in. Offering protection from the southerly winds while capturing warm northerly light, the living and outdoor spaces achieve a perfect balance between openness and shelter.

Solar panels ensure the home operates off the grid, while natural materials bring warmth and authenticity to every room. In the master suite, expansive ocean views take centre stage, with a sculptural bath on the flipside offering a tranquil retreat. Artisan plaster walls add depth and texture, their subtle movement reflecting the changing light and rhythm of the environment.

A cozy snug room provides a quiet sanctuary — the perfect nook for curling up with a book or enjoying a movie.

A testament to the owners’ vision and the builder’s craftsmanship, this residence stands as a welcoming masterpiece where architecture, art, and nature intertwine.

Our clients approached us with a bold and visionary brief: to design a contemporary home that echoes the character of a converted farm dairy. The architectural concept centered around simple, rectangular pavilions constructed from steel, glass, masonry, and carefully sourced recycled materials. These pavilions are linked by cattle grate-style walkways, separating the private and communal areas of the home while maintaining a sense of openness and rural authenticity.

A standout feature of the design is the elevated, circular bedroom suites inspired by traditional grain silos—an inventive nod to the site's agricultural roots. This interplay of form and function creates a residence that is both sculptural and practical.

The project’s success lay in the meticulous selection of materials and finishes. Our clients were deeply invested and energetic, working in close collaboration with their builder and dedicating countless hours to researching and sourcing products—both new and reclaimed. Their commitment and passion are reflected in the final result: a home that is striking, sustainable, and deeply personal.

We’re proud to see this unique project aptly named “Silo House”, showcased on Grand Designs Australia, where it stands as a testament to the power of vision, design, and perseverance.

Turning A 368sqm Space Into A Large Family Beach House

The db design team were really excited to design this large family beach house in Inverloch on a canvas of only 368sqm we had to pull out all the stops to deliver a practical and live-able design that ticked all the boxes for the owners including dual living areas, dual balconies to make the most of the amazing view and also a private outdoor entertaining area complete with a large spa! We're really proud of this design and Piasente Construction have done an amazing job with the intricate build. Bring on the next challenge!
